Annie on My Mind By Nancy Garden

Annie On My Mind was published 36 years ago. People, 36 years ago!

Oh! My! God! This is such a astoundingly beautiful book, it should be made compulsory reading in schools instead of being banned.

Liza meets Annie on a solo visit to a museum. Annie is also alone…singing, when Liza first sees her. Both are teenagers, seventeen year olds. They develop a friendship, find a connection. Their friendship grows and so do their feelings for each other.

Liza is the narrator and we are privy to her thoughts, her struggles, her feeling and her trials when she and Annie are discovered. It is a love story. One of the most beautiful love stories in the coming of age period. It just so happens that the two people involved are girls (which also makes it more beautiful). It is a soft and tender love story.

The focus and description of the physical dimension is not much, but that doesn’t even register as you are simply surrounded by the breathtaking expanse of emotion. The beauty of their story is simply devastating. The writing flows easily.

One of the greatest achievements of the author is that she makes both the girls real and you end up feeling both and liking both equally. This is an exceptional feat.

This book tugs on every heartstring that you have. Thankfully, despite the time and age it was published in, it has a happy ending. HEA or HFN is open to the reader…and we are certain that 100% readers believe that it is HEA because Liza and Annie are just so meant to be together.
