My Fake Canadian Wife By M. Hollis

Fake girlfriend/wife tropes are always fun to read. So we were quite excited about it. Plus the cover was really attractive. However, this one left us feeling rather incomplete.

Dora, a South American, had come to Canada to study photography. At some point her course got completed, her camera broke, she is in a dead-end waitressing job and has received a notice from the immigration office of impending deportation since her visa has expired. She is at the end of her tether and panicky. A co-worker finds a solution: her friend Abby is willing to pretend-marry Dora to help her.

The premise is interesting enough but Dora is not exactly likeable. Plus, we never really get to know the MCs. Abby is promising, but sadly under-developed. There is no chemistry between the Dora and Abby.

It is meant to be fluff for a short read (it’s a novella) and while it fulfils the fluff and short read aspects, it really doesn’t grab or capture the reader for any length of time. If a short read is the criterion, then Ab Kaāl’s Payback’s a Bitch and Everything Has Changed are much better options.
