The Island Angel By Alex Slorra

Two girls carrying baggage from the past; and not just relationship baggage at that. The author has created two very interesting characters, Anna and Jessica in this book. Not only are they interesting, both are really nice too.

Twenty-nine year old Anna is a recently divorced American, choosing to stay in a remote island in UK. She is on the verge of bankruptcy and is struggling to make ends meet plus bring up her teenaged daughter. Jessica, a successful IT Director is on the verge of resigning when her world comes crashing down and she is accused of fraud. Panicked, she takes off without any means, money or friends. Her one slim hope is an ex-girlfriend with whom things hadn’t ended well. Jessica finds herself stranded and Anna comes to her rescue.

The relationship between Anna and Jessica could have been made a little more involving if their interactions before getting together had been a little more developed. Their conversations and emotional arcs as they proceed are thoroughly engaging, especially Anna’s fearlessness in plunging towards where her heart leads. But a little more would’ve been welcome.

The author adds urgency with both their worst nightmares catching up with them, but the edge-of-seat thrill doesn’t come through. Though, on the whole, this is a fairly nice enough read. We want to give it a 4 (because we really liked Anna), but have to go with a 3.5.
