Breaking Down Her Walls by Erin Zak

⭐⭐⭐

Julia Finch chooses to be constantly on the move to escape situations. But she could well be trying to outrun herself. During one of her attempts at running away, her car breaks down in a tiny, tiny hamlet in Colorado. Stuck because her car is going to take a while to get repaired, Julia is also almost broke, so she takes on the position of a ranch hand at a ranch owned by Elena Bennett. Recovering from being dumped Elena is self-protective and chooses to be aloof to achieve the end of excluding everyone out of possible romance.

The MCs are nice enough, particularly Julia. But then it is all written from Julia’s PoV so we know her better. The conflict in form of Elena’s ex, Penn was not totally convincing. In fact, in another setting, treated in a different way, Penn and Elena’s story could make a good romance.

The chemistry between the two MCs is good. We always love age gap romances, so that is also a plus in this one. The interactions between Julie and Elena’s teenaged son are really nice. Leia, the horse, is the kind of horse we read about in legends.

A weird thing was the frequency with which Julia’s penchant for ‘running away’ is mentioned – even by characters who don’t know her at all. That was belabouring the point way, way, way too much.

On the whole, an okay read.
