Falling Slowly by Lila Bruce

⭐⭐⭐

This book started off so well and we were thoroughly enjoying it right up to Chapter 18. And suddenly at that point, the romance, the build-up of the relationship, everything suddenly went into a fast forward that practically felt like a whiplash.

Captain Quinn Briscoe, a pilot, got badly wounded in Afghanistan. She carries scars, both physical and emotional. The emotional scars come from having been dumped because of her physical scars. Her family, particularly younger sister Rebekah try to ensure that Quinn doesn’t become a complete recluse. Rebekah’s trying to get her handcrafted bags into a prestigious chain of stores and has Quinn drive her for her meeting with Alison Jenkins, one of the two owners. When Quinn and Alison first meet, the sparks that fly are not entirely romantic. Over time, a couple more meetings, and some decency, some over-the-top niceness has the two MCs spending more time together.

Like we said, the first 17 chapters are so good and so engaging. The characterisation of both the MCs is well done and their relationship is nicely explored and built-up. And then wham! What feels like a let’s-get-this-over-with turbo-fuelling happens and it’s all over and tied up in the next four chapters (including the Epilogue). Kinda leaves you wondering ‘What just happened?’

But the MCs, particularly Alison, are very, very nice. If only the author had dealt with the latter part in the same way she wrote the first half, this would be one of the best lesfic romances.
