A Moment in Time by Lisa Moreau

Feuding families. Falling for persona non grata. The synopsis grabbed us because this is a lesbian Romeo and Juliet – and of course, we want to read all spin-offs of the Bard of Avon.

The Fontenots and the Savoys hate each other with passion. The reason: Claire Fontenot and Kurt Savoy were getting married. Actually getting married when Claire ran away leaving Kurt standing at the altar. The fathers of the bride and bridegroom were the best of friends but this incident drives a serious wedge in that relationship. After her turn as the runaway bride, Claire left town to never return. But return she does – fifteen years later. Claire seems to have an irresistible attraction towards and from the Savoys because almost as soon as she returns there is an irresistible draw between Claire and Kurt’s little (no longer so little now) sister, Ivy.

We absolutely love that Claire studies clouds for a living and Ivy’s dream job is to repair watches. Unusual and interesting choices. There is so much sweetness in affection and liking between the MCs for each other.

This is an entirely whimsical story with improbable situations, convoluted twists to bring the MCs together, fate unfolding in dreams and even an angel thrown into the mix. All of this means this is a fairytale not assuming to be a contemporary romance – and it is thoroughly enjoyable in that space.

PS: Another lesbian retelling of Romeo and Juliet is Never-Tied Nora.
