The Bad Mothers' Book Club by Keris Stainton

⭐⭐⭐⭐

This book is more chicklit than lesfic but is thoroughly enjoyable.

It starts in the dreaded gate-moms world. Yeah, that is a real thing and a universal thing crossing geographies. Cliques are formed by moms at the gates of their kids’ schools and they are as clique-y as high school cliques with the same dynamics. Moms are accepted and rejected by other moms. There is one group that is the ‘star’ group. Oftentimes these groups define friendships for kids. So, it is quite a big thing.

Emma Chance is new to the neighbourhood and is about to drop off her kids for their first day at school. Emma is kind of scattered – not quite on top of time management, amongst other things and makes a gate-mom faux pas with parking her car. The book is peopled with a large number of characters – Jools, Eve, Maggie, Hanan, Beth (to name a few)…plus their spouses and kids. With gate-mom dynamics as the delta, this book tells the stories of most of the women and humanizes and justifies most characters till we feel nicely towards every mom out there.

There is one brief Sapphic interlude which points towards a late-life realisation about her sexuality in one of the moms.

This one is a light and very enjoyable read.
